Types of Materials Suitable for the Blow Molding Process

Some examples of consumer products made possible with a top-of-the-line stretch blow molding machine include water bottles, milk jugs, peanut butter jars, shampoo and cream rinse bottles, storage tanks, and plastic drums. Not only can this equipment produce a broad range of shapes but also items from small to large. This shows that the stretch blow molding process is widely used by many different industries.

For customers interested in buying equipment they can count on, they’ll never go wrong choosing a PET stretch blow molding machine. As for the “trusted source,” Pet All Manufacturers is an industry leader with years of experience and extensive knowledge. For anyone who needs information or wants to discuss their type of manufacturing to determine the best machine, they should contact Pet All directly.

The other great thing about a PET stretch blow molding machine is that customers can use many different materials. The selection depends on the product. For instance, drums need a thicker wall to give them stability, while soda bottles require thinner walls. Regardless there are two crucial factors to ensure that businesses manufacture what they need to their specifications.

The Advantages of Using the Stretch Blow Molding Process

As you look at the stretch blow molding process as a whole, you see even more advantages. At the top of the list is the fact this innovative molding method stretches plastic bottles, jars, and containers in both the hoop and axel direction. Known as biaxial stretching, this increases tolerable drop impact, tensile strength, barrier properties, top load, and clarity.

According to experts who rely on a PET stretch blow molding machine daily, the increased strength makes it possible for manufacturers to reduce the overall weight of the finished product by as much as 15 percent. That has a significant impact on the cost of production, as well as shipping.

How Revolutionary Is Stretch Blow Molding for Plastic Manufacturers?

When it was first introduced, the stretch blow molding process made it possible for various industries to offer customers more innovative plastic products. For the plastic manufacturer, this revolutionized its capabilities. A perfect example of this is the soda bottle. Initially, manufacturers made single serve bottles. However, that soon changed to 64 ounces thanks to the stretching process.

This type of machine even improved on overall design. For instance, when Pepsi started making large plastic bottles for its soda, it had a separate molded base cup. With improved materials and the advanced stretch blow molding machine, the bottles are now all one piece. Not only did this prevent problems with accidental leaks, but it also made the product more visually appealing.

Key Advantages

For superior finished plastic products, manufacturers prefer the PET stretch blow molding machine. That means this specific machine produces PET bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate. These bottles are ideal for products like soda, water, juice, and so on. Although it was introduced in the 1970s, the stretching process has come a long way. Today, manufacturing companies use it to make bottles and containers for laundry soap, motor oil, hair shampoo and conditioner, milk, and so on.

Although there are many benefits of this molding process, the fact that the machine stretches the plastic material in both the hoop and axel direction ranks at the top of the list. This biaxial stretching process improves the tolerable drop impact, increases the barrier properties, enhances clarity, and increases both top load and tensile strength. As a result, manufacturers can decrease the weight of a container by as much as 15 percent, which in turn, saves significant money.

Stretch Blow Molding and Its Various Uses

4ab749a7-ed4f-401c-80b6-ca33f33cf5f4

Although stretch blow molding produces a variety of products, it is best known for the production of PET bottles used for juices, sports drinks, water, and similar products. First introduced in the early part of the 1970s thanks to advanced materials and techniques, it is now what manufactures prefer among the different types of blow molding for making bottles for carbonated beverages.

The primary benefit of using this molding process is that it can stretch a preform in both the axial and hoop direction. With the biaxial stretching of materials, tensile strength increases, as does clarity, drop impact, barrier properties, and top load. Also, the weight of the container decreases by as much as 15 percent compared to using one of the other types of blow molding processes.

There are two categories: single-stage and two-stage. For the single-stage, an extruder injects a parison into the preform mold where the plastic material cools rapidly to form the preform. Once reheated and placed into the bottle mold, the now-softened parison stretches to roughly 50 percent of its original length. At that point, compressed air gets blown into the parison, expanding it to the bottle mold. After the bottle cools, the mold opens and the finished product ejects.

Stretch Blow Molding and Its Different Applications

Stretch-Blow-Molding.jpg

Stretch blow molding is a manufacturing process that’s well suited for different applications across a broad range of industry sectors.

Blow molding is an engineering procedure in which hollow plastic forms such as water bottles and juice bottles are formed. Stretch blow molding is one type of blow molding that allows the preformed products – in this example that being bottles – to be manufactured into high-quality bottles with high clarity – and the full scope of stretch blow molding allows for an extensive and diverse number of uses. Stretch blow molding is most often used for making plastic bottles for water, juice, carbonated beverages, and a variety of other products such as liquid soaps and detergents.

The primary advantage to stretch blow molding is that it is known for bi-axial stretching (that is, having two axes). There are significant benefits to this process. For example, it makes for improved barrier properties, better clarity of the formed container, improves the malleable strength of the container, and also makes for acceptable impact tolerances. This all means that there’s an increase in the strength of the container along with a reduction in the weight of the container of roughly 10 to 15 percent (as opposed to other production methods). This in turn translates to cost savings while producing high-quality, attractive containers.

Blow Molding: How It Works

Before going into detail as to how blow molding works, it helps to understand what it is. This manufacturing process is actually comprised of two parts. First is a parison, which is the starting tube made from molten plastic. The second part is the inflation of the tube, which is what molds the part or component into the desired shape.

This particular type of molding is used to make hollow plastic containers. Some examples include jars; containers; and bottles for milk, sports drinks, shampoo and conditioner, and so on. In other words, the containers that hold products used by millions of people around the world on a daily basis are created using this molding process.

This process offers many advantages. The blow molding method works well for creating complex shapes, production times are fast, and the empty plastic containers are recyclable.

There are three specific types of blow molding machines

Confusion in Blow Mold Machine Names

blow-mold-machine-names

  • Injection Blow Molding (IBM)
  • Extrusion Blow Molding (EBM)
  • Injection Stretch Blow Molding (ISBM)
  • Reheat Stretch Blow Molding (RHSB)

These terms are used on a daily basis in the plastic blow molding machine business.  They can be very confusing to blow molding machinery users.

Many users mix up Injection Stretch Blow Molding (ISBM) and Injection Blow Molding (IBM) in particular.  The difference between these two is the word “stretch”, which refers almost exclusively to PET which is stretched to give added strength.  HDPE and PP are rarely “stretched”, but injection blow molded without “stretch”.  The neck is injected, and the body blown in the same process (IBM).
