How Does Stretch Blow Molding Work?

When it comes to manufacturing, many companies rely on various services yet have little knowledge about the processes themselves. Take the stretch blow molding machine as a perfect example. Although different industries depend on it to produce finished products based on exact specifications and tolerances, they don’t fully understand how it works.

Keep in mind there are several unique types of stretch blow molding machines, including the all-electric and continuous motion L Series. However, the goal is always to produce precision plastic bottles and containers used for things like water, juice, tea, cooking oil, sauces, condiments, alcoholic beverages, and even cosmetics. For superior quality and cost-effective products, it’s essential that you work with one of the top stretch blow molding manufacturers.

How Does Pressure Affect a PET Stretch Blow Molding Machine?

Compressed air is one of the primary components of the PET stretch blow molding machine. It is what helps stretch and form the plastic bottle, container, or jar required by the customer. For one thing, inaccurate pressure would fail to stretch the product as needed. As a result, you would waste a significant amount of time, resources, and money producing inefficient products.

The other thing to consider is that if the level of pressure is too high, you could end up paying more for the stretch blow molding process than you should. It comes down to using the appropriate amount of pressure to stretch the preform but not so much that you waste money. On average, a high-volume stretch blow molder with PET material requires between 2,000 and 4,000 horsepower of installed air compressors.

Potential Challenges

There is a phase of the process where reheat stretch blow molding occurs. For instance, to soften the preform, allowing it to stretch twice its normal length, the machine reheats the preform and then places it in the container mold. It is after that point that air fills the container, thereby stretching it to fill the mold. Without the right pressure, the machine cannot perform this step correctly.

Sometimes, the machine itself creates challenges when it comes to the efficiency of the compressed air system. For instance, the stretch blow molding machine could experience a significant drop in pressure or perhaps have a large instantaneous demand in air swing. Other possible issues include massive horsepower sizes needed for individual compressors and the need to have several pressure requirements throughout one facility.

The goal is to focus attention on pressure drops within the machinery used for stretch blow molding. By doing so, you can save up to 30 percent on energy consumption. While 15 percent of that comes from the supply side, the additional 15 percent comes from being alert and identifying problems before they spiral out of control.

Even though most stretch machines have pressure fluctuations between 50 and 60 psi, the goal is to stabilize the air pressure. Again, this reduces the amount of energy consumption, which saves money. The other benefit is that it increases overall production. Although these problems are all fixable, you can avoid many pressure issues by purchasing a stretch blow molding machine from a reputable manufacturing company.
